Orangeries, private châteaux and the grandest town hall in the region
Versailles is the closest thing France has to a purpose-built wedding town. Forty minutes from central Paris, and an unusual density of eighteenth-century buildings that were designed to hold a party.
The town itself
Beyond the estate, Versailles is a working town with a covered market, wide avenues and a town hall whose ceremonial room is among the most photogenic in the region. Couples often marry civilly there in the morning and move out to a private château for the afternoon.
Where the receptions happen
Orangeries and private châteaux ring the town, most of them within fifteen minutes by car. Several open only for private events and never appear in venue directories — your planner will know them. The wider Yvelines hold a dozen more.
Light and timing
The stone here is pale and it bounces. Late afternoon in an orangery needs almost nothing added, which suits the way I work — documentary, handheld, without lighting stands.

The estate hosts a very limited number of private events and applies its own rules for photography. Most Versailles weddings I cover take place in private châteaux and orangeries around the town.
