The 1st is the oldest and the most photographed square kilometre in Paris. It is also the smallest by population, which means that on a Saturday morning you can have the Palais-Royal colonnades almost to yourself.
The character of the 1st
Vendôme, the Palais-Royal, the Tuileries, the Louvre and the Comédie-Française sit within a ten-minute walk of one another. For a couple session that is an unusual luxury: four completely different backdrops without ever getting into a car.
The trade-off is footfall. From eleven in the morning the arcades fill up. Early light or the hour before sunset are the two windows worth defending in your timeline.
Where weddings happen in the 1st
The Ritz on the place Vendôme, with the most photographed courtyard in Paris and a garden that stays cool in July. Le Meurice a few streets east on the rue de Rivoli. The mairie du 1er, small and unfussy, for the civil ceremony. And the Palais-Royal gardens, which are public and free to walk through.
How I photograph here
Documentary, handheld, no lighting stands. In an arrondissement this dense the work is largely a matter of anticipation — knowing where the light will be in twenty minutes and being there before you are needed.

Yes, handheld and without blocking circulation. Tripods and organised sessions need a permit; working fast and light keeps us within what is allowed.

The hour after sunrise or the ninety minutes before sunset. Between those two the arcades are crowded.
